Overview
Each piece is the result of a balance between meticulous preparation and spontaneous decision-making, embodying the duality of chaos and order. Frequently, his work reinterprets historical artifacts within contemporary contexts, bridging temporal divides and fostering a dialogue between past and present.
Dimitris Tampakis's work embodies a desire that is both deadly and liberating, reflecting the complexities of the new human experience—a hybrid being navigating an anesthetized society in search of existential awakening. He delves into the psyche of those who crave unexpected encounters, moments that elicit discomfort and challenge perceptions. Tampakis focuses on these cringeworthy peaks where profound awakenings may occur—an instinctive reawakening, akin to L'appel du Vide, the intoxicating pull felt on the edge of a leap.
His work occupies a space between the primitive and the estranged, inviting contemplation of humanity's trajectory. Tampakis is deliberate in his consideration of the viewer’s perspective, strategically placing his sculptures within gallery spaces to encourage engagement from multiple angles. This interaction prompts shifts in the viewer’s physical positioning and perspectives. He embraces the concept of accidents, welcoming the unplanned and trusting the creative process to reveal beauty in unexpected outcomes. By working with raw materials without overlays, Tampakis constructs processes that aim to produce random, unforeseen results.
This approach enables him to capture the ephemeral nature of creation, likened to a traumatic flash that conveys deeper truths. Tampakis approaches his medium with a fresh perspective, free from conventional constraints. Each piece is the result of a balance between meticulous preparation and spontaneous decision-making, embodying the duality of chaos and order. Frequently, his work reinterprets historical artifacts within contemporary contexts, bridging temporal divides and fostering a dialogue between past and present.
Through this lens, Tampakis challenges perceptions, encouraging confrontations with the visceral and the sublime, while inviting a collective awakening from the slumber of indifference.
